Online Astronomical Images & Data
 |
- Nine Planets
Solar System Tour is an overview of the history, mythology, and current scientific
knowledge of each of the planets and moons in our solar system. Each page has text and
images, some have sounds and movies, most provide references to additional related
information.
|
 | Messier Deep-Sky Catalog a complete guide to
the 110 objects recognized as the standard Messier catalog. For each object, an image is
presented together with a short description. |
 | Best of the Space Telescope A sort of HST
"greatest hits" album. Hosted by SEDS, this site is much faster than the
StSci site. |
 | The Web Nebulae Bill Arnett's gallery of
images and information about nebulae. |
 | NGC 2000 Browser Hartmut
Frommert's site that allows you to enter an NGC catalogue number. It then returns a
page that conatains images, data and descriptions of each object. |
 | Digitized Sky Survey is an
online browser of the NGS-POSS-I sky survey images-- perfect for verifying comets and
minor planets. |
 | NASA's SkyView is a Virtual
Observatory on the Net generating images of any part of the sky at wavelengths in all
regimes from Radio to Gamma-Ray. |
 | Automated POSS-I Plate Scanner
Use this site to search the POSS-I catalog, create a finder chart or generate an image
from the Palimar Observatory Sky Survey. |
 | BASS 2000 is a high resolution
solar spectrum browser provided by the Institut National des Sciences de l'Univers /
Observatoire de Paris. |
 | Solar System Simulator Created by David Seal,
this amazing site generates simulated view of the solar system, planets, satellites,
etc. based on your input. |
Online Star Charts
 | AstroImage is a Finnish site
that quickly generates an all-sky chart as a GIF image. You control the date, time and
observing location. |
Online Data & Catalogs
 | Astronomical Data Center (ADC) A NASA resource
for astronomical catalogs and journal data tables. |
 | Astrophysical Data System (ADS)
provides several data access services through the World Wide Web. |
 | Canada Astronomical Data Center (CADC) The CADC
was established in 1986 as one of three world-wide distribution centres for data from the Hubble Space Telescope. |
 | JPL's Solar System Dynamics Group JPL's solar
system dynamics WWW site provides information related to all known bodies in orbit around
the sun. |
 | NASA/IPAC Extragalactic Database (NED) is
built around a master list of extragalactic objects for which
cross-identifications of names have been established, accurate positions and redshifts
entered to the extent possible, and some basic data collected. Bibliographic references
relevant to individual objects have been compiled, and abstracts of extragalactic interest
are kept on line. Detailed and referenced photometry, position, and redshift data have
been taken from large compilations, and will eventually be collected from the literature. |
 | National Space Science Data
Center (NSSDC) provides access to a wide variety of astrophysics, space physics, solar
physics, lunar and planetary data from NASA space flight missions, in addition to selected
other data and some models and software. |
 | NGC/IC Project is a collaborative effort between
professional and amateur astronomers working together to correctly identify all of the
original NGC and IC objects, starting with the original discoverer's notes and working
forward in time to encompass the work of contemporary astronomers, both professional and
amateur, such that the identity of each of the NGC and IC objects is known with as much
certainty as we can reasonably bring to it from the existing historical record. |
 | Other Worlds, Distant Suns Catalog of
extrasolar planets. |
 | Planetary Data System (PDS) The Planetary Data
System (PDS) archives and distributes digital data from past and present NASA planetary
missions, astronomical observations, and laboratory measurements. |
 | SIMBAD Galactic Object Database,
created and maintained by the CDS,
Strasbourg, brings together basic data, cross-identifications, observational
measurements, and bibliography, for celestial objects outside the solar system: stars,
galaxies, and nonstellar objects within our galaxy, or in external galaxies. |
 | Strasbourg Astronomical Data Center is a data
center dedicated to the collection and worldwide distribution of astronomical data and
related information. |
 | Universal Research Archive of Networked Information
in Astronomy (URANIA) Named for the muse of astronomy, the Urania resource is composed
of electronic astronomical scholarly journals, bibliographic information, electronic
archives of original data, electronic copies of the historical scholarly literature for
the last twenty years and a special reference system archive organized by object in the
sky. The separate resources which make up Urania comprise a functioning distributed
digital library of astronomical information which provides a power and utility heretofore
unavailable to the researcher. |
 | U.S. Naval Observatory's Astronomical Applications
Dept. is jointly responsible for publishing the annual Astronomical
Almanac, Nautical Almanac, and Air Almanac.
They also produce MICA,
a computer-based almanac, and other astronomical software products. In addition, they
compute and make available a wide variety of practical astronomical data. |
